An Integrated System for Querying Medical Digital

Abstract

This chapter presents an original dedicated integrated software system for managing and querying alphanumerical information and images from medical domain. The software system has a modularized architecture with the following functions: medical data acquisition from three primary sources, processing this information for extracting useful information, compacting data in a unitary format and storing the information in a database controlled by a multimedia relational database management system. The main and original function of the multimedia database management system (MMDBMS) is the possibility to execute content-based query, because the visual information is very important in the medical domain. The MMDBMS has a visual interface for building complex content-based visual query. This interface gives the possibility to choose the query image and the characteristics that will be used, i.e. colour, texture or their combination.
