An Integrated Plate Tectonics, Stratigraphy and Gravity and Magnetic Study of the Muglad Basin, Sudan

Abstract

This contribution has two aims – to reinforce the plate tectonic linkage between the evolving Atlantic Ocean ridge system with the poly-phase development of the West and Central African Rift system by correlating the stratigraphic unconformities of the Muglad rift basin with the changes in relative plate motions within the Atlantic Ocean. Then by using the newly compiled gravity and magnetic data for the Muglad basin to generate a new structure and depth to basement map that confirms the close relation between basement structure and known oil accumulations and to spatially identify new targets areas worthy of investigation.
