Abstract

On account of the limited usability of conventional CAD and calculation systems, the development of integrated design systems covering all activities of the entire design process is now preferred. Most of the presently existing solutions are application-specific expansions of commercial systems, such as solutions for special cases like shaft hub connections or gears. There are no systems that cover all design activities. Because of the large amount of effort needed for integration, a strong dependence upon a specific system arises, so that a change of the system or of a release is only possible with considerable financial effort. Another possibility is the use of standardized product model data as the basis for integrated design systems. This method allows the division into model and application data and offers an optimal adaptation of commercial CAD systems to application-specific needs. In particular, the application protocols of ISO 10303/STEP for the first time offer good conditions.
