Abstract

Acid pre-impregnated steam explosion (APSE) pretreatment was employed to hydrolyze hemicellulose to produce butanol. The cellulose and lignin remaining in the solid were utilized to produce boxboard. The optimal conditions were consisted of pre-impregnation at a concentration of 2% sulfuric acid for 30 min, steam explosion pressure of 1.6 MPa, and residence time for 5 min. Under these conditions, the handsheet with the weight of 80 g m−2 was produced by corn straw explosion pulping, the burst index was 0.99 kPa m2 g-1, the tensile index was 24 N m g-1, the ring crush index was 0.58 N m g-1, the breaking length was 2469 m, which were close to the strength indexes of waste corrugated pulp. The steam explosion hydrolysate was fermented by Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824. The percentage of monosaccharides consumed reached 93.2%, and the yield of ABE was 0.31 g/g sugar (acetone: 0.09 g/g, butanol: 0.18 g/g, ethanol: 0.04 g/g). The bio-refining of corn straw to produce butanol and pulp is a kind of utilization method with industrialization potential, which can realize the high-value comprehensive utilization of straw.
