Abstract

ABSTRACT A wide variety of electromagnetic scattering problems have recently been studied by means of approximate (numerical) solutions. The starting point for these studies is an integral representation for the electric and magnetic fields. In this paper, a derivation of the necessary field representation is presented which proceeds from the first order Maxwell equations alone without recourse to the second order vector Green's theorem. The approach yields a compact expression involving a Green's matrix whose components have a simple and direct physical interpretation. The formulation includes Kottler line sources where necessary without additional assumptions and clearly identifies the undesirable singularities.
