Abstract

An integral model for instantaneous release of heavy gas clouds in a calm environment is developed. The predicted frontal velocity differs from the gravity head expression assumed by other models in that it contains additional terms dependent upon both the cloud profile, cloud density, ground friction and air entrainment. The model is tested against experimental results and the agreement is satisfactory. A comparison with other models is also given.
