Abstract

Of China's total population of 1.2 billion, 900 million Chinese people live in the countryside. How to enable peasants, who comprise 80 percent of the population, to exercise democratic rights is an important but difficult subject for our nation's political life. In the early fall, we went to Songliao Plain, which was on the verge of a bumper crop, to investigate this issue. We have seen with great elation that basic democratic political construction characterized by democratic elections, democratic decision making, democratic management, and democratic supervision has brought about new energy and injected new life into the great agricultural province of Jilin.
