Abstract

The write/read performance of the single-pole-type (SPT) head for perpendicular magnetic recording was investigated. The main pole consisted of sputtered amorphous Co-Zr-Nb films with thicknesses of Tm=0.3-1.2 mu m. The track width was 300 mu m. The same flexible CoCr/NiFe double-layer medium was used for measuring the write/read performance of each SPT head. The dependence of the recording sensitivity, the readback output voltage V/sub rp/, the second peak output voltage, and the resolution D/sub 50/ on the main pole thickness was measured and is discussed. It was found that V/sub rp/ increased by 30% when the saturation flux density of the main pole film was increased from 10000 G to 14000 G. >
