Abstract

Abstract The inapplicability of the so-called “surface mobility mechanism” (SMM) for explaining stress corrosion cracking (SCC) under a constant stress was demonstrated previously. However, SMM is still used, for example, as a universal SCC mechanism, notably under the conditions of the constant strain rate test (CSRT), etc. However, as shown here, SMM based on self-diffusion mass transport under stress (known as Nabarro creep) is not credible, because the crack propagation rate in SMM can never be numerically equal to the diffusion creep deformation rate under the same stress at the same time in the same material.
