Abstract

The educational system is expected to disseminate information and knowledge about different ethnic and cultural groups living in India. A number of unfortunate incidents have taken place recently in which people from Northeast India have faced the brunt. People in Northeast India mostly face racial discrimination due to their looks, dressing style, languages spoken and cultural factors. An educational remedy is needed in this particular case. Educational intervention should be such that more and more awareness must be created about their achievements amongst other Indians. An inclusive and contextual curriculum can take care of this particular need. An inclusive curriculum will help in overcoming the geographical and cultural distance between the Northeast region and the rest of India. Contextual curriculum facilitates development of meaningful connections between content and context. This paper justifies the need for an inclusive and contextual school curriculum in general and in Northeast India in particular.
