Abstract

The phase formation in CuAl thin film couples is studied by X-ray analysis during in situ annealing in the temperature range 35–500°C. After the first nucleation of CuAl 2, the f.c.c.-ordered phase β-Cu 3Al forms. The formation of transient phases and end phases is discussed. A new phase was detected in the transient stage of the interface reaction on the aluminum-rich side of the atomic ratio Cu:Al = 1:1. The X-ray data are presented. This new phase β′-CuAl x is a hexagonal superlattice of cubic f.c.c.-ordered β-Cu 3Al. The transformation is analogous to the β cub→r ω hex transformation in zirconium-base alloys.
