Abstract

Cr-coated zirconium (Zr) alloy is one of the potential candidate materials for accident tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding. However, little attention has been paid in the simultaneous microstructure evolution of Cr coating and Zr alloy matrix under irradiation, which is necessary for comprehensive evaluation of the alloy irradiation performance. In the present work, in-situ ion irradiation experiment was conducted to capture the major features during simultaneous microstructure evolution of Cr coating and Zr alloy at various temperatures. It is found that at 300 ℃ the size and number density of dislocation loops increase with irradiation dose, but at higher temperature the tendency seems different, which is related to the formation of dislocation networks. Besides, the extent of precipitate amorphization in Zr alloy matrix decreases with temperature due to the recovery of irradiation defects. The present work may provide useful insights into the irradiation property of the Cr-coated Zr alloy for ATF applications.
