Abstract

Unsteady aerodynamics study of pitching airfoils at various frequencies and amplitude at low Reynolds numbers of the order of insect/birds flight is of importance to design and fly micro aerial vehicle to meet the requirement of paramilitary forces, Border Security forces, and other homeland service forces. A new methodology has been developed for the analysis of pitching airfoil based on CFD tool “OpenFOAM”. Since experimental data is available for NACA 0012 airfoil in pitching motion, conditions relevant to the experiment are chosen for the analysis. As pitching frequency increases, there is an increase in thrust coefficient. Similar trends are observed from experiment; however, OpenFOAM agreement with experiment is good at k = 0 and k = 6.68. There is a frequency (k = 6.68) at which there is no thrust or drag. This observation was also found from the experiment.
