Abstract

Long Range (LoRa) has become one of the promising technologies of Low-Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks for the Internet of Things (IoT) application. However, there is no any key management and updating mechanisms defined for LoRa. In this paper, we propose an improved secure key management scheme for LoRa communication system to distribute and update the static key remotely. Specifically, the device and the server respectively use the Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) Wallet for key management. They perform key agreement through the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key exchange algorithm and periodically update the static key remotely. Moreover, the bi-directional Hash algorithm is used to minimize the computational cost and communication overhead. The experimental results show that the proposed key management scheme can achieve the trade-off between security, computational cost, and communication overhead.
