Abstract

It has been demonstrated that a Bragg cell modulator can be used as an efficient laser beam shutter. Application of the technique to a schlieren system has provided easily controllable and synchronized light pulses attended by high sensitivity resulting from the small effective source size of the laser. This technique, complemented by photographic averaging, has been used successfully to obtain novel flow visualization results of large scale structures produced at the nozzle exit by upstream acoustic excitation, both with and without flow.
