Abstract

Improved procedures for the preparation of both 1,2-di- O-benzyl- sn-glycerol and 1,2-di-O- acyl-3-O(β- d- glycopyranosyl)-sn- glycerol have been developed. These have enabled a relatively straightforward and inexpensive synthesis of a homologous series of 1,2-di-O- acyl-3-O-(β- d-glucopyranosyl )-sn- glycerols with n-acyl chains ranging from 12 to 20 carbon atoms. The analytical data on these compounds is consistent with their expected structures and a very high sample purity. This synthetic strategy is suitable for the preparation of glycerolipids with varying acyl chains and sugar headgroups in quantities suitable for detailed structural studies.
