Abstract

Abstract A Monte Carlo technique is presented for obtaining accurate estimates of component failure probabilities based on small sample sizes. It is an improvement on a recent method by Harbitz and is based on the exclusion from sampling of a maximum hypersphere contained in the safe region as opposed to that of the ν-sphere. After finding the maximum hypersphere in the standard normal space of basic variables a two-stage sampling procedure involving conditional distributions is employed.
