Abstract

A modification of the method described by J. Tokunaga and S. Bartnicki-Garcia (1971, Arch. Mikrobiol. 79: 283–292) allows the production of motile zoospores from Phytophthora palmivora at concentrations exceeding 2 × 10 6 ml −1. The zoospores are released within a period of 5 min, under conditions which allow greater control of the chemical environment than flooding of agar plates. The method depends on brushing the deciduous sporangia into distilled water at 24°C following a temperature shock.
