Abstract

An improved method for the isolation and identification of fecal secondary bile acids was developed. This method employs tlc to separate 3α-hydroxycholanoic acids from 3β-hydroxycholanoic acids (iso bile acids). The bile acids were identified by a combination of tlc, glc, and glc/ms. This method was used to analyze fecal material of rats fed a variety of bile acid-supplemented diets. The amounts of iso bile acids increased when the amounts of bile acids in the gut were elevated.
