Abstract

Voltage reference control for Static Var Compensators (SVC) has been widely applied to improve industrial substation voltage profile during large induction motor starting. Specifically, the susceptance control reference has been preferred for industrial substation power factor correction. In this paper, a combined SVC control is suggested to overcome industrial substation dynamic difficulties for both large and small load disturbances. The suggested SVC controller will give fast acting response during motor starting based on voltage reference. Meanwhile, the susceptance reference will guide the SVC controller to act slowly for power factor correction as a small load variation. A case study of 1.4 MW large induction motor starting is presented with three conventional starting methods. A comparative study is conducted to simulation results for these different starting cases. An alternative starting method is suggested using SVC, where the SVC behavior is investigated for both large induction motor starting and power factor correction. Finally, the simulation results provide bases for the safe and reliable operation and would insure a robust design of practical substation.
