Abstract

A high performance liquid chromatography system for the analysis of photosynthetic pigments is presented. The method employs an octadecylsilica stationary phase, a programmed quaternary mobile phase consisting of mixtures of methanol, acetonitrile, water and hexane, and a photodiode array detector. Carotenoids and chlorophylls are rapidly analysed in a single chromatographic separation. Thecis-trans isomers of most carotenoids are separated by this method.
