Abstract

We attained heavy Tb 3+-doping into a SiO 2 matrix up to 22.8 mol% in Tb 2O 3 concentration by sol–gel process using terbium nitrate. Co-doping of Al 3+ and/or Na + led to the improvement on photoluminescence characteristics: The 5 D 3 emission was observed at low Tb 3+ concentration, indicating an inter-ionic resonant energy transfer, and the intensity of 5 D 4 emission increased up to 10 mol% with increasing Tb 3+ concentration in co-doped samples. The effect of Al 3+ and Na + on the glass network and neighboring configuration of Tb 3+ is discussed based on the optical spectra.
