Abstract

In view of automatic mesh simplification algorithm often losing important geometric characteristics in large-scale simplification models at present, the paper proposes an improved edge collapse simplification algorithm which can effectively keep the triangular mesh partial features based on Garland's quadric error metric. Vertex slope is introduced as an additional weight. The paper takes the vertex slope as basic quadric error metric, and don't change quadratic matrix properties. Experiments show that the algorithm not only has inherited higher speed and quality of the QEM (quadric error metric) algorithm, but also overcomes the shortcoming of uniform grid and being not obvious local feature.
