Abstract

A novel and simple control method is proposed in this paper to improve the operation performance of the distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM) under unbalanced operating condition. The functional block for extracting positive and negative sequence components is eventually avoided by employing dual current regulators in positive- and negative-rotating synchronous frames. A notch filter is proposed to be added to the direct axis current control of the positive rotating synchronous frame to vanish the third harmonic and negative sequence components in the output current caused by the second harmonic in the DC-link voltage as well as the second harmonic disturbance resulting from coordinate transformation, and the proportional integral (PI) controller can achieve positive sequence reactive current and negative sequence current track without usage of a resonant (R) controller. Therefore, compared to the previous work, the proposed method is simpler and the algorithm is also simpler to implement. Simulation results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control method under severe unbalanced operating conditions.
