Abstract

A new method is proposed for the estimation of bounds for the critical parameters in thermal explosion theory for an arbitrary shape. This involves showing that the thermal regime in an arbitrary shape can be compared with that in a simpler shape, in practice a sphere or an infinite circular cylinder. This shape is calculated from the geometry alone. The advanges of this method are its remarkable simplicity and the fact that the estimates obtained are an improvement on earlier results.
