Abstract

A third-order correction to πd elastic scattering involving nucleon-nucleon rescattering is calculated and found to give an important contribution to the differential cross section. Due to strong off-shell effects, we are forced to examine the controversial question of the range of the pion-nucleon (πN) interaction. The difficulties in defining a range are intimately related to the separation of left- and right-hand cuts in the πN amplitude which are not distinguished in the on-shell Chew-Low theory. Failure to draw this distinction can lead to spurious results.
