Abstract

Question: An elderly gentleman presented with a 1-week history of colicky epigastric pain, associated with nonbilious vomiting and nonbloody diarrhea. He also has a background of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic alcoholism with recurrent pancreatitis, and longstanding normocytic normochromic anemia. Physical examination revealed epigastric tenderness with no other signs of peritonism. Laboratory investigations showed a normal white cell count of 8.17 × 103 /μL (reference range, 4–11 × 103 /μL) and normal liver function tests.
