Abstract

This paper describes a prototype implementation of an important new recommendation from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) which defines a manufacturer-independent Programming Communications Interface (PCI) for the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). The ETSI PCI recommendation is analysed and compared with other current ISDN programming interfaces. The design presented in this paper is cirtically analysed and possible improvements are suggested. The results of a survey undertaken to investigate the approach of the ISDN equipment manufacturers to the ETSI PCI is also presented.
