Abstract
Synopsis A previously unrecorded ice-wedge structure in the carbonaceous shales above the Charlestown Main Limestone at Cults, Fife, is described. Associated fracturing and distortion of the bedding are ascribed to an origin during Pleistocene periglacial conditions. Intense fracturing of the uppermost 5 metres of the shales suggests that the active layer penetrated to this depth for some time, its base being marked by sub-horizontal breaks.
