Abstract

The effect of ion-beam irradiation of YBa 2Cu 3O 7 superconductors has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Different ion beams have been used (H, 4He, 12C, 16O and 127I at 1, 4, 10, 25 and 200 MeV, respectively) in an attempt to study the radiation damage with respect to the mass of the bombarding ions. In addition different doses of irradiation have been tried for each ion beam in order to define the critical dose at which the crystalline to amorphous transformation of the superconductor takes place and to characterize the defect structure responsible for this transformation.
