Abstract

This paper provides an overview over the work undertaken within an IAEA Co-ordinated Research Project (CRP) that is intend to address some issues related to the long-term stability of uranium mill tailing disposal facilities. The long-term stability is of concern since all engineered infrastructure will only have a limited lifespan after which the confinement of the long-lived radionuclides in the tailings cannot be guaranteed anymore. The project began in 2000 and will run to 2004 and addresses both technical and managerial measures.
