Abstract

An approximation to the nonlinear theory of the two component Bénard problem, taking into account thermal diffusion, shows that multiple stable steady states are possible. The stability of each steady state is investigated. The nonlinear equations are then integrated numerically. An hysteresis loop in the Rayleigh number-Nusselt number plane is observed.
