Abstract

Abstract The location of Sr atoms and the atomic structure of planar features in strontium lithium β-alumina have been studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Comparisons of lattice images with multislice computer simulations suggest that the Sr atoms lie only on the Beevers-Ross sites within the (0001) conduction planes. A structural model based on the incorporation of additional layers in spinel slabs is proposed for planar faults with an (0001) habit. Computer simulations using this model are shown to give an excellent match to experimental images. The consequences of these observations for conduction mechanisms and structural stability in Sr Li β-Al2O3 are discussed.
