Abstract

This article presents a novel intelligent quality of service (QoS) management system for local area networks (LANs). The QoS management is based on service quality prediction, which is carried out by general regression neural network algorithm with a profile containing the past records of the services. A novel fast computation scheme is proposed to reduce the search space for finding the optimal bandwidth allocation without degrading the performance of the QoS management. To further reduce the computation time, a hardware implementation of the proposed algorithm based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is also presented. The FPGA architecture is served as an accelerator to a system on a chip in a real LAN for performance evaluation. The experiment results reveal that the proposed algorithm provides reliable QoS management for LAN applications with low computational overhead and accurate network resource allocation.
