Abstract

Extremely thin scintillation detectors for thermal neutrons were prepared by vacuum coating. Thermal neutrons are absorbed in a 6LiF layer of appropriate thickness, the 3H- and α-particles released causing scintillations in the underlying ZnS(Ag) layer. Both layers result from vacuum coating. This neutron detector has a negligible γ-sensitivity and is well suited for time-of-flight arrangements since the low thickness of the 6LiF layer (20 μm) exactly locates the termination of flight.
