Abstract
A bent nonlinear directional coupler is proposed where the weak coupler modes may be switched by a control field, guided at a different frequency in the spacing region. Because the individual waveguides are bent the device length appears to be an uncritical parameter. In contrast to a conventional nonlinear directional coupler the switching is due to the dependence of the coupling coefficient on the control power rather than on waveguide detuning.
