Abstract

Understanding the anatomy of the lumbar multifidus and its responses to low back pain and surgery are crucial steps toward the development of preventive and intervention strategies for patients and are the focus of this review. The anatomical literature is reviewed in regards to normal, pathological, gross and histological. The histological review includes metabolism and muscle spindle density.
