Abstract
In the previous decade, the integration of renewable energy sources, to mitigating the power quality issues like voltage stability, transient stability, harmonics etc., are the very challenging task for the power engineers. The Power electronic based converters topology was used to interconnect the developing energy storage systems and incorporate these systems in smart homes and buildings. Flexible ac transmission systems (FACTSs) are the power electronic based controllers which is mainly used for the transmission and distribution systems to overcome the various issues in the electrical power grid and also they act as a filter to improve the quality of power. By connecting FACTS devices in the transmission side, stability and voltage regulation are enhanced and in the distribution side it contributes to the improvement of power quality, power factor, effective power utilization. It acts as a filter to minimize the harmonics. This article reviews the various FACTS controllers and its utilization in micro grid and smart grid environments.
