Abstract

The update of a variable (i.e. the assignment of a value which depends on the previous value of that variable) requires that the variable has to be specified in the left-hand part of an assignment statement as well as in the right-hand part again. Therefore, writing of such statements is unnecessarily tedious and error-prone.The proposed solution is to introduce a "pronoun character", which may be used in the right-hand part of an assignment statement, and which then denotes the value which was assigned to the designator just before the assignment statement is executed.
