Abstract

Abstract Greening's theory of vacuum chambers is extended to include non-uniform radiation fields and the saturation characteristics of spherical and parallel plate vacuum chambers are calculated. This analysis predicts markedly different characteristics for a spherical chamber in an attenuated radiation field and for a parallel plate chamber in an unattenuated radiation field. Vacuum chambers of these geometries have been constructed and their saturation characteristics measured in attenuated and unattenuated radiation fields. The results obtained agree with the analysis and it is concluded that Greening's theory is correct.
