Abstract

We derive extended formulations for the two-stage stochastic unit commitment with reserves. Our approach can capture most physical characteristics of a complicated thermal generator including min-up/-down time limit, time-dependent start-up costs, start-up/shut-down ramping, general ramping in the stable region, and reserve amount commitments. The extended formulations include both the convex hull descriptions for the feasible region and convex envelopes for the convex piece-wise linear and convex quadratic objective functions, which provide the optimal objective value for the original problem.
