Abstract

ABSTRACT Advances of environmental technology play an important role for corporate commitment to sustainability. Along with other driving forces such as corporate social responsibility, customer demand for sustainable products, social activism, and government regulation, technology supports enhancing the competitive advantages of the corporations proactively involved in sustainable product and process innovation. This paper re-examines the impacts of technology advance on the level of corporate commitment to sustainability through a survey of public perception, a content analysis of the CSR reports, and a case study of global corporations. The survey illustrates the differing importance of the drivers between countries, the content analysis reveals the varying emphases of sustainability across the industry, and the exploratory case study explores alternative approaches to sustainability chosen by the global corporations reflecting their strategic orientation and capability available to capitalize on the relevant technologies for sustainable product and process innovation.
