Abstract

Fifth grade students' conceptions of the relationships among thirty-one science, technology and society issues were explored in this study. Sixteen males and fifteen females participated in the study which used the technique of multidimensional scaling analysis, as well as qualitative data comprising of written statements provided by the subjects. Findings of the study suggest that both male and female subjects at this grade level had developed meaningful conceptions of relationships among issues which have personal relevance to them. Students at this grade level had not developed very clear conceptions of the relationships among environmental issues. The implications of the findings of this study are discussed.
