Abstract

External team communication effects on team perceptions of trust and distrust were analyzed in a qualitative study of military outsourcing teams. This study examined the development of trust and distrust based on collective team members’ reactions to different communication scenarios. This inter-team study found support for Ancona and Caldwell’s (1992) typology of communication behaviors— Ambassador, Task Coordinator, and Scouting—associated with perceptions of trust. Research also supported a new type of external group communication pattern that we have classified as Dramatic Spectacle. Academic and practical implications of these findings in investigating and managing team-based designs are discussed.
