Abstract

This paper describes an exploratory numerical model of sediment transport and deposition on an idealized tidal salt marsh. The mass transport equation is simplified to make it hyperbolic in one space dimension and time. The box scheme is used for the numerical solution and this is satisfactorily checked against an exact solution for a particular case. Difficulties encountered in the numerical solution for the flood and ebb tides are discussed. The results from using the programme on sediment made up of a population of different sized particles are in qualitative agreement with observations on the Severn Estuary and the Lincolnshire and Norfolk coasts.
