Abstract

The selection and optimum utilization of tool holders and inserts is important for reducing manufacturing costs. The process of selection is time consuming and requires highly experienced process planners or tool engineers. This paper describes a Cutting Tool Expert system (CTE) developed to assist users in cutting tool selection or design. The system is implemented using the M.1 expert shell, runs on a personal computer. CTE queries the user on the type of operation, workpiece material and condition, tolerance, surface finish, etc. The system's recommendations are based on the ANSI/ISO specifications. CTE also suggests the appropriate cutting conditions for the selected insert.
