Abstract

This paper summarizes work on the development a Fault Tree Construction Assistant (FTCA).1,2 This system can help the analyst produce high quality fault trees by the use of expert system and workstation technologies. Introducing a workstation environment with an interactive set of integrated software tools on a local computer promotes improved continuity in the thought process of a fault tree development. The expert system technology simplifies the way fault trees are specified and it allows the incorporation of various kinds of prior knowledge and experience. The key contribution demonstrated in this paper is the ability of very effectively resolving logical loops. In our experience, an expert system approach is effective in promoting consistency throughout the tree and giving “expert” assistance at various points in the fault tree development.
