Abstract

I attempted to induce simultaneous settlement in populations of Microtus townsendii over two spring periods. Male and female voles were removed from field populations, held, and then rereleased in two ways: sequentially (three or four pairs every 3–4 days) or simultaneously (all released at one time). There was no significant difference between the two treatments. Striking differences in demography were observed between years on unmanipulated control populations. The failure of this initial attempt to demonstrate simultaneous settlement in voles may have resulted from the technique used. Experiments are suggested to test for the forms of simultaneous settlement believed to be important in contributing to vole outbreaks.
