Abstract

In the research, the effect of Quench polish Quench (QPQ) process parameters on the quality of carbonitride coating on stainless steel was studied using the Taguchi design of experimentation. The experiments have been performed to investigate the hardness and wear rate of the coated surface. The carbonitriding temperature, carbonitriding time, quench-oil-temperature, and oxidising time are considered as process parameters. The best combination of QPQ parameters is predicted to reduce the wear rate and increase the hardness of the coating layer. The predicted results have been validated by confirming experiments. The microstructure of the carbonitriding coated surface and the worn-out surface have also been examined by SEM analysis. The hardness has been improved and the wear rate has been decreased by increasing all QPQ process parameters.
