Abstract

The problem of surface shear traction distribution arising from two bodies in rolling contact with an imposed relative spin is studied with the aid of the frozen stress photo-elastic technique. The results are compared with Kalker's generalized strip theory 1 1 J. J. Kalker, A strip theory for rolling with slip and spin, to be published in Proc. Koninkl. Ned. Akad. Wetenschap. . The basic assumptions of the theory are carefully examined in the light of the experiments and it is shown that it provides a simple and viable model for the very complex situation of rolling with spin at spin parameter values less than unity.
